There is an old Malay proverb - “kalau nak melentur aur, biarlah dari rebung” - which wisely teaches us that to inculcate habits in anyone, it is necessary to start doing so while they are young.

And wisely enough, this was exactly what the Road Safety Department did when the 6^th edition of its national road show was held at the popular Sunway Pyramid shopping mall from the 1^st to the 3^rd of August 2008. The three day road show saw hundreds of primary and secondary school students from 14 schools in the state invited to learn about how to stay safe and alive as pedestrians and passengers.

The interactive games and educational puzzles, which are standard features of the road shows, allowed the students to understand the dangers of being careless and the importance of safety regulations, while the prizes were certainly appreciated.

“I’ve learnt that road safety is a very serious issue and that we should always practise it whenever we go anywhere for our own safety,” said 13 year olds Alfean Awang from Petaling Jaya, who was grinning after solving a puzzle which reinforced the importance of paying attention to road signs.

For 15 year old Rajinder Kaur, it was the realization that everyone in the car has to buckle up to stay safe that made her appreciate the visit to the 3 day exhibition. “From now on, I’ll be telling everyone to buckle up. Even those who are sitting in the back,” she said after a tour of the exhibition with her classmates.

The road show at the Sunway Pyramid is the sixth road show this year following those held in Putrajaya, Kuantan, Johor Baru, Kuala Terengganu and Melaka,  and was officially launched by Y Berbahagia Dato’ Hj. Zakaria Bin Hj. Bahari, Secretary General, Ministry of Transport Malaysia.

The road show attracted over 6,000 visitors over the weekend, and included the participation of tBoon Siew Honda Sdn Bhd, PUSPAKOM Sdn Bhd, Gear Helmets (M) Sdn Bhd, AAM, Fire & Rescue Department and the National Anti-Drug Agency.
